Canon Point: End of Chapter 18, when she goes missing.
Background:
We do not know much of Kyouka's existence before her first appearance in the manga. She explains that she was taken in by the port mafia for her powers after she had killed her family, and since that point, she has murdered 35 people, including a family of three. Her first job, according to her, was to infiltrate a building and kill two people. She has never tried to be secretive about the killings, as it appears that pictures of her have been taken and thus she would be identifiable. Other than that, we have no canon information on her past.
Her first appearance in the manga has her involved in a bombing of a subway train with another mafia member. The goal of this attack is to get the man-tiger, Atsushi, to hand himself over to the mafia by threatening to blow up everyone aboard if he refuses. Her mission is to guard the bomb in the back of the train with her life, and when Atsushi shows up, there is a fight with Demon Snow, where she basically pummels him into the ground. However, he eventually disarms Demon Snow, and Kyouka shows that the bomb is strapped to her body, although she doesn’t seem to care at all. Atsushi comments on her completely emotionless state, asking if she has a wish. It is then revealed the bomb will go off in a few seconds, and Kyouka, finally making a decision for herself, throws herself and the bomb off the train, saying she does not wish to kill anymore.
However, Atsushi saves her before the bomb goes off, and the next time she awakens, she is at the Armed Detective Agency. She explains (after extorting about ten bowls of expensive tofu stew from the Agency) that her “head” is Akutagawa, and that he is the voice over the cellphone that commands Demon Snow what to do as she has no control over Demon Snow by herself. After a day of fun with Atsushi, she asks to be handed over to the police, saying she has no right to live. This is when Akutagawa shows up, explains that she was bait, much to her despair, and kidnaps both her and Atsushi.
The next time she appears is when Atsushi, Akutagawa and herself are on a boat, where Atsushi is going to be transported out of the country. Here she confronts Akutagawa, and tries to free Atsushi. She fails, and is choked and told she is worthless without the mafia. She simply states that she might be, but the day she had with Atsushi was worth getting killed for over returning to the mafia. She then causes an explosion on the boat in an attempt to let Atsushi get away, and Akutagawa nearly kills her. In the end, she is saved by Atsushi.
She joins the Detective Agency after that, stating that Akutagawa told her she could only ever be good for killing, and that she wants to prove him wrong. She goes to live with Atsushi, and avoids capture from the police by posing as the Director’s granddaughter. Her first mission goes less than smooth due to her use of very unconventional methods, but in the end, all is well. She and Atsushi are approached by Kouyou Ozaki, another member of the port mafia, who had figured out how to reestablish contact with Kyouka’s phone. Kouyou and Atsushi fight, but in the end, Kyouka decides to go with the mafia member. However, she Kouyou, attempting to kill her and taking the phone used to control Demon Snow. The phone is broken in the fight, and Kyouka, having nowhere else to go, follows her. However, sometime afterwards, Kyouka goes missing when Kouyou is defeated by the Guild.
Personality: Kyouka, to most, appears like a blank slate: she’s nearly emotionless, and she doesn’t seem to have many desires. This is mainly the fault of the mafia, whom for most of her life has told her she is worthless, “carnage incarnate”, and wouldn’t be of much use outside of killing. She doesn’t see the small things in life as anything she particularly has a choice in, which is why she reacts the way she does. However, if asked what she wants to do, she voices opinions, like wanting to get crepes when asked what she wants to do during her day of fun. She is also very curious to see the outside world, and during her day of fun, she drags Atsushi to do everything she wants to do. She doesn’t voice her opinions on trivial things unless asked, it seems. She simply does what she is asked to do, unless she has a strong opinion otherwise.
She does have strong desires, but they are very simple ones. She wants to live in the world that Atsushi lives in, the world full of light, and not the world of the mafia. Even with what seems to be mounting evidence against her being able to do that, like the way her parents were killed by Demon Snow, she refuses to give up on her desire to be free of that life. In fact, even when she agrees that she may be worthless, she pushes herself to get better. Now that she’s been shown the world of light, she says, she can’t abandon it.
Even through all this, her mafia-taught tendencies still remain to an extent. Her go to reaction for any problem is “killing” or doing something otherwise unethical, but it’s not because she prefers to do that, but because that is what the mafia has taught her. She understands that killing is wrong, but she doesn’t know how to do anything else. She appears to be trying to avoid that reaction, but it will take a long time for something so inbred in her to be taken out.
Abilities: Demon Snow: A demon that takes form and fights for Kyouka. Kyouka, however, can’t control Demon Snow—she carries around a flip phone that reccieves calls, and whomever calls that phone can order Demon Snow to do whatever they want. Demon Snow, however, is not a sentient being—think of it as more of a puppet than an actual being. Demon Snow is a large demon who fights with a sword, much faster than any human, and does not appear unless summoned by a phone call.
Alignment: Thras, due to the fact most of her character arc has been about being brave against all odds. Basically, the way I see it, Kyouka is choosing to think against all odds that her life will be better in the outside world, even though she’s only ever been told she’s useless. Plus, she starts to fear that her life will be ruined when people rip those things away from her, like Akutagawa and Kouyou nearly did.
Other: Nothing I can think of.
